Soda has a wide variety of names such as carbonated beverages, fizzy drinks, soft drinks or pop. These drinks can contain many harmful chemicals that can have negative effects on the human body. Soft drinks can contain carbonated water, sweetener and either natural or artificial flavoring. The sweetener contains large amounts of sugar and fructose. There are bad connotations surrounding soft drinks, like the cause of acne, addiction to soft drinks, dental decay, obesity and weight-related diseases therefore causing persons to live an unhealthy lifestyle.
The first harmful side effect of drinking soda is the damaging effect is has on your skin. The sweetness causes acne and blemishes on the face and also leads to accelerated aging. All sodas contain phosphates or phosphoric acids. This acid gives the sodas their tangy flavour and gives them their long shelf life. The purest form of this harmful chemical, which is a powder substance, when accidentally inhaled can cause blurred vision, trouble breathing and gastrointestinal problems. However in soda it can still have negative effects on your bones and teeth, this happens because phosphoric acid prevents the body from effectively absorbing the mineral calcium.
The lack of nutrients is another reason that should incline people to stop drinking soft drinks. There is absolutely no positive benefits surrounding the consumption of sugary soft drinks, however the health hazards of soda are endless. Another chemical found in sodas that have no benefits would be high fructose corn syrup. Fructose corn syrup can contribute to extra calories, boost your risk of heart disease and cause an increase in weight gain.
High levels of sugar found in soda can almost become toxic if taken in large doses. Having too much glucose in the blood is highly toxic and causes complications of diabetes like blindness. The high level of sugar in soda can cause cancer which is one the leading causes of death worldwide. Soda addiction stems from the high sugar content. The sugar causes a huge dopamine release which is so much more than the amount found in fruits.
Finally the most disturbing health risk of soda would be the artificial sweeteners. However soft drink manufacturers tend to swap the sugar with aspartame which is so much more harmful. This chemical has been linked to almost 120 different health problems, including brain tumors, emotional disorders, diabetes and even seizures.
All in all, there is no benefit of drinking such soft drinks, not even to quench your thirst because they actually cause you to become more dehydrated than when you started. The high levels of sodium, sugar and caffeine dehydrate the body.
